Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale Announces Curatorial Team

‎‌This year’s team are set to bring a new and immersive art experience to life, with a unique blend of contemporary art, performance, sound, research, and digital art.

ArtDayME: The curation team for the second edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale (DCAB) has been announced.

Scheduled to span three months, the 2024 edition of DCAB will encompass freshly commissioned art and architectural ventures alongside existing artworks and research projects. Additionally, a vibrant program of live performances, concerts, and poetry readings is also expected to be featured throughout the biennale.

As announced earlier in 2023, the biennale will be showcased under the leadership of Ute Meta Bauer, as the artistic director. And, just this week the entirety of the team was announced.

The curation team is comprised of various artists and curation experts including Wejdan Reda, who is both the curator and co-curator for Diriyah Biennale Foundation, and DCAB, 2024; Rahul Gudipudi will act as adjunct curator alongside co-curators, Rose Lejeune and Anca Rujoiu.

The curatorial team will also work with Ana Salazar, Amina Diab, Dian Arumningtyas and Alanood AlSudairi.

In anticipation of the 2024 DCAB, Bauer and the curatorial team embarked on a number of journeys to different regions of Saudi Arabia to study the country's cultural landscape and establish connections with up-coming, newly discovered and established Saudi artists from various generations. The team visited cities such as Dammam, Khobar, Al-hasaa, Riyadh, Jeddah, Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Rijaal Almaa.

Two new Biennales for 2024 and 2025 in Saudi Arabia

ArtDayME wrote on September 22, 2023: More art is coming! The official return of two Saudi Biennales 2024-2025 have been announced.

Riyadh will be welcoming a new edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale in 2024 with the second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale heading back to Jeddah in 2025.

Both of the aforementioned biennales are part of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, which was established by the Ministry of Culture in 2020. The organisation plays an essential role in supporting and accelerating creative expression across arts, culture, and music through public events.

Official dates for both Saudi Biennales 2024-2025 have yet to be revealed.

The Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale was the first contemporary art biennale to be introduced in Saudi with the first edition held from December 2021 to March 2022 at JAX District. The event previously showcased works by regional and international artists

The first Islamic Arts Biennale took place in Jeddah in January 2023 and continued until April 2023 at the iconic Hajj terminal. The exhibition pays tribute to Islamic culture (past and present) and highlights the balance between traditions and modernity.
