Contemporary Fiber Art Shines at Green Art Gallery Dubai

ArtDayMe: Azadeh Jafarian: Green Art Gallery in Alserkal Avenue has been hosting "Reverberations: Textile as Echo," the second exhibition in a trilogy curated by Murtaza Vali. This exhibition has been showcasing contemporary approaches to textile and fiber art by artists M’barek Bouhchichi, Sayan Chanda, Himali Singh Soin, and Swapnaa Tamhane.

The gallery has been bringing together artworks that reference the rich traditions of textile arts from South and West Asia and North Africa. These pieces have been incorporating traditional dyeing and weaving techniques, using materials such as wool, cotton, and silk. Each artist has been collaborating with master artisans to highlight the vitality of Indigenous textile traditions, challenging colonial and modernist discourses that have historically devalued these practices.

M’barek Bouhchichi has been continuing his exploration of southeastern Moroccan and northeastern Malian textile traditions with his Terra series. Sayan Chanda has been revisiting Bengali cultural history with his Jomi series, which has been deconstructing and reassembling vintage Kantha quilts into new abstract compositions.

Himali Singh Soin has been translating her sound recordings from the earth’s icy poles into a double Ikat tapestry, produced in collaboration with master weaver Gajam Govardhan and his family. Swapnaa Tamhane has been working with the Qasab Kutch Craftswomen Producer Co. Ltd to create her Bird’s-Eye series, which has been featuring intricate mirror embroidery on vividly colored fabrics.

"Reverberations: Textile as Echo" has been emphasizing the collaborative and multisensory nature of textile art. By drawing on traditional techniques and materials, these artists have been ensuring that the history and cultural significance of textile arts continue to resonate in contemporary contexts.

The exhibition opened to the public and will continue until July 27, 2024, at Green Art Gallery, Al Quoz 1, Street 8, Alserkal Avenue, Unit 28, Dubai.
